The enduring power of Charles Darwin's writings is no doubt best exhibited in the compelling accumulation of scientific discoveries which have unfailingly, if sometimes obliquely, acknowledged a debt to On the Origins of Species ( Darwin 1859 ). But it seems a truism that even the most remarkable piece of writing may derive as much notoriety from its echoes, shadows and reflections as from its initial appearance.
