The study addresses the highway infrastructure as an urban artifact within the evolving landscape of Nice. The subject is the choice of routing of the Autoroute Urbaine Sud (A.U.S.), and the conceptual underpinnings of the expressway route at the time of its construction, between 1962 and 1984. The research does not tackle the constellation of contemporary highway infrastructure issues, nor does it analyze the as yet unbuilt project to “ double ” the A.U.S. Rather, this work presents a history of the A.U.S., followed by an analysis of its route in relation to four related infrastructures.
