Geographical images constructed by people in the past pose historical geographers with a challenge, because they can only be reconstructed using indirect evidence ( Claval, 1982 ). The French peasantry have left us with very few self-portraits, but many images of them were created in words, pictures and numbers by educated non-peasants.
