This study of Akan government has relevance for the current concerns about the institutionalization of democracy in Ghana, as elsewhere in Africa. The problem of the paper is the extent to which the political tradition of the Akan people embodied democracy, the argument being that the success of the present democratic experiment would depend on indigenous experience with democratic norms.
