One of the components of Paul Claval's multivalent career has been as an interpreter of trends in " Anglo-Saxon geography " to the Francophone world. As Knafou's ( 1997 ) recent survey of French geography has shown, there have been relatively few contacts between those two worlds in recent decades, and consequently there is much mutual ignorance, despite Paul's efforts and those of a few English geographers who retain strong interests in the geography of and geography in France, such as Hugh Clout.
