ORGANISATIONAL MANAGEMENT OF RISK RELATED TO NUCLEAR POWER

Paul Ja Howarth

Risks related to the nuclear industry, as for any heavy engineering or energy generation industry can be broad and varied. For example they can cover financial investment, safe operations, environmental impact, technological risk, operability and performance, reliability of generation and security related. For nuclear generation, risks that immediately are associated with the industry from public perception relate to safety, environment and security. This paper concentrates on the issues surrounding safety, environmental and security risk and the organisational management that exists in the UK to regulate civil nuclear industrial activities. Concepts such as Tolerability of Risk and ALARP (As Low as Reasonably Practical) are introduced which underpin the regulatory and licensing approach in the UK. The prospects for new nuclear build are introduced in relation to advanced reactor systems which offer significant benefits of improved safety features. The challenges of licensing such reactor systems as part of the new nuclear build process which needs to take place over the next few years is discussed.
