RISK COMMUNICATION AND MANAGEMENT IN THE UK : SOME WEEKEND REFLECTIONS

Ragnar Lofstedt

Virtually all UK government bodies are in some shape or form involved in risk communication and management work. Department of Transport is involved in communicating risks associated with drunk driving, Home Office is worried about crime communication, and Treasury about financial risk management. That said, clearly some bodies are more active than others. It is the more active ones that I want to focus on in this brief presentation. On the metalevel we need to understand, depending upon who you ask that approximately 50 per cent of environmental, food and health safety regulation originates in Brussels. One such regulation coming to the UK shortly is REACH-the European chemical control regulation that David Gee was involved with. These regulations made in Brussels are examined and "Anglicised" by the Department or Agency in question. For example, REACH is being handled by Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
